Customer Review: Decent tripod, let down by easily broken plastic parts.

After looking around for a tripod for digital landscape photography on a budget I decided to buy the Davis & Sanford Ranger, it is made by Tiffen and I have had good results from Tiffen filters in the past.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was that the tripod was broken. One of the plastic parts connecting the legs to the center shaft was snapped due to a leg locking flap being left open and getting wedged in the weight hook. This was most likely a problem from the factory, not caused by the Amazon seller.
The plastic used seems very cheap, breaks very easily and I expect, based on what I have seen so far that when I go hiking with this tripod I will encounter more problems with the weak plastic which for some reason is used in those areas of highest stress that need the strongest components.
I would rather have a tripod with strong pivots and plastic legs than weak plastic pivots and nice aluminum legs.
Like most things these days it's made in China.
One positive to this tripod is the head with removable camera mount, it's nice to be able to remove my camera in seconds rather than mess around unscrewing it. The head also flips up to allow quick change to vertical format.
Despite Tiffen providing a 10yr warranty on this tripod I decided that I would rather try to fix it myself than go through the hassle of shipping it back to them but so far have been unable to repair it to my satisfaction. I may give their customer service a try...
